I came across this article on Forbes.com, and as a McKinney Estate Planning Attorney, I see and discuss these issues on a daily basis. This simple list provides a brief and helpful explanation of the common mistakes made by families everyday.

I think the article’s intro paragraph makes a point that should not be overlooked. I’ll rephrase it as, “you would be surprised how many families work hard to provide for themselves and their children, yet ‘cheap out’ on the estate planning that will carry on there legacy.” It is the old-fashioned “you get what you pay for” mantra that I find myself delicately trying to explain to grieving family members.

One issue I have with the article is the frequent focus on “wealthy” or “high net worth” individuals and preserving money and taxes. While these are accurate statements, “average” families like you and me benefit from almost all of the points discussed. Additionally, as a McKinney Wills and Trusts Attorney, I like to also focus on family relationships and how we want to leave our legacy.
